Being a confident and self assured person affects many areas of your life. You probably want to be confident in your work, within your friendship groups, amongst your family, and within whatever pastimes you indulge. Being confident gets you somewhere, for sure. Top athletes are confident in their sport; successful leaders are confident in their decisions; social butterflies are confident in their conversation and mannerisms. We see it everywhere, but how can you build your confidence? Read on for our top tips.
1. Focus on your strengths.
What are you good at? Find out, and pledge to make this an area that you are confident in. Whatever your strength is, you can endeavor to become an expert in that area. This might involve taking on an extra role at work, or setting up something within the community.
2. Become known for your abilities.
When you know what your strength is, do all you can to become renowned for being an expert in that topic. Again, this can apply to almost anything. Arrange a work excursion or get involved with a local college or school, help out at a specialist group, or offer your services as written information online. Once you become known for your expertise in that area, people will start to respect you.
3. Be sure of yourself.
Even when you are confident in your chosen area, you still may not feel completely confident. Let’s say you’re about to walk into a social situation. Take a deep breath, make sure you feel as best as you can about how you look, and enter the room. If you don’t immediately recognize anyone to talk to, then admire the décor or food, or immerse yourself in doing something. When you do see someone you know, make some light small talk or compliment them on something. The trick is to keep smiling, know what you’re good at, and take your time.
4. The opposite works too.
Unfortunately all these tips for building confidence, also work in reverse. If you become known for a bad trait, that is what people will think of when they see you, so avoid having anything negative being associated with you. Reputations stick, so create a positive one for yourself and you’ll be streets ahead.
5. Confidence isn’t about being loud.
Confidence is being comfortable with yourself. You don’t have to be loud, chatty, obnoxious, or have a packed social to be confidence. In fact, if you have none of those things and are still confident within yourself, you’re a real winner.
