1. Questions about family.
Instead of asking “How many brothers and sisters do you have? What do you parents do? What was your first pet?” try asking some of these questions:
- What was the naughtiest or funniest thing you ever did with your siblings?
- Did you ever have to go to work with your parents for the day? What was it like?
- What was the craziest pet you ever owned?

2. Questions about work.
Instead of asking “What job do you do? How long have you done it? Do you enjoy it?” try asking some of these questions:
- What job did you want to do when you were younger?
- What’s your favourite / least favourite aspect of your current job?
- If you could change three things about your boss, what would they be?

3. Questions about hobbies.
Avoid boring questions such as “What team do you support? Do you go to the gym? What is your favourite movie?” and instead ask something along the lines of:
- What would be your ideal way of keeping fit?
- If you made a movie, what would it be about and who would be in it?
- If you had a whole month free off work and studying, how would you spend each day?!

OK, so you have managed to get your crush to agree to go on a date with you. And you’ve booked a table at that nice restaurant. But then you are sitting at the restaurant, looking at the menu, and you are both silent. You don’t know what to say! First date conversations can be difficult. You need to be careful not to offend of turn off your crush, but you also want to find out about them. Here’s an great guide on everything you need to know!

First date conversation 1

At the beginning of the date, keep it simple and start with ‘Today Questions’. You could ask your date: what have you been up to today? Did it take you long to get here? How was the weather in your area? Remember: don’t bombard your crush with questions, but see if these simple non-invasive questions lead to a topic of conversation you can chat about.

Now you’ve broken the ice, you can begin to talk about things which show a little more about what you and your crush as like. Discuss sports, films, music, TV, books, travel, art. These common interest questions will allow you to determine whether you have similar hobbies as your crush. You could say “So, what was the last film you saw at the cinema?” Or, “Do you often go to concerts or music festivals?” Or how about, “What kind of books do you like to read?”

By now, you should be able to judge whether you and date are getting on well or not. You can delve a bit deeper by asking them slightly more personal questions. You could ask “Do you enjoy your job/study course?” This is an open ended question which allows you to understand more about your crush. You might ask about their living situations, whether they like the neighbourhood they live in, or where they went to school. All of these topics of conversation are great for finding out more detail about your crush and their personality.

If you feel that you are really connecting well with your crush, then you could ask them about their hopes, dreams and aspirations for the future. This will really give you a good insight into how your crush sees him/herself and you will get a good idea of whether you are compatible in a relationship.

Whilst it’s ideal to have on-going conversation about topics which interest both you and your date, it’s likely that you’ll both be nervous about talking too much, and cautious about what impressions you give out. But, you can liven it up – and find out more about your crush! – by posing them our fun questions to ask on a first date!

You’ve managed to get your crush to agree to go on a date with you! Well done! But it’s a good idea to have some topics of conversation ready so that you can find out more about your date, and so that there’s no awkward silences! Here’s our top five things to talk about on a first date.

1. Music. Nearly everyone likes music. What artists or bands does your date like? Do they go to concerts, opera, festivals or theatre? What was the last CD they bought? What do they have on their MP3 player or iPod at the moment? Do they play any musical instruments? What about favourite songs or lyrics?

2. Hobbies. Everyone likes to spend free time doing things they enjoy. You might like to ask your date about sports (playing or watching!), cooking, movies, gardening, outdoor pursuits, or creative interests such as writing, painting or making things.

3. Hopes and Dreams. You can find out a lot about your date by asking where they see themselves in five or ten years time. By asking them this, you can find out if they are career minded or family orientated. Perhaps they aspire to living abroad or setting up their own company. Ask! And see if you’re compatible!

4. Travel. Even if it’s just around your own country, most people have some travel experiences. Talk about places you have visited, what you thought of them, or places you dream of going. Does you date like luxurious holidays, or backpacking adventures? Lazy days on the beach, or exciting city breaks?

5. Family and Pets. We all have a silly story about when we were younger, or our family life. Ask your date about their first pet, or they’re funniest memory whilst growing up.

When you’re first dating someone, it’s a good idea to keep conversation light-hearted and fun.  You don’t want to put your date off by showing negativity or too strong opinions.  There’s a few key things to avoid talking about on a first date, and if you manage to steer conversation away from these major topics, then your date will be a lot more successful!  Save these heated topics for when you get to know each other a bit better.

1. Politics.  It’s an easy topic to end up arguing about, or alternatively, your crush might not know much about politics and feel daunted by your conversation.  You don’t want to ruin your chances before the date has even got started properly.  It is definitely not advisable to start a discussion on third world debt or whether communism really works!  You may also run the risk of sounding too self-important.  Save politics for a later date when you’re a little better acquainted.

2. Religion.  Unless you’re certain that you both have the same religion, this could again result in arguments.  If you’re not sure, keep it for a discussion in later dates once you have gotten to know each other a bit better.  Remember: some people feel extremely strongly about religion, and you certainly don’t want to insult your date!

3. Personal Issues.  Dates are supposed to be light hearted and fun.  Avoid getting into conversations about depressing topics, such as money problems, previous relationships, or bad habits.  Keep it light hearted and fun and your date will be phoning you for a second date soon!
